About Mark Basik

Mark Basik was born in Montréal and studied medicine at McGill University. He then completed a general surgical residency at Université de Montréal, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. After working as a surgical oncologist at the Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Montréal, he returned to the USA as a visiting investigator at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Maryland. In 2003, he began working as a surgical oncologist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montréal and is presently the Medical Director of the inter-disciplinary breast cancer team. Besides practicing breast cancer surgery, Dr. Basik also leads a research laboratory studying the molecular biology of breast cancer. His research interests include DNA alterations in breast cancer and the discovery of novel diagnostic biomarkers for breast cancer. He is also studying the mechanism of resistance to novel treatments such as Herceptin. Finally, Dr. Basik’s team is searching for novel biomarkers in the blood of breast cancer patients.
