Pierre Drapeau and his team at Université of Montréal have recently discovered mutations in the gene (TDP-43) associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The team will use zebrafish, a model system for the study of neuromotor diseases. Because the embryos are small, they can be obtained in large numbers and develop motor behaviors within a day; it is possible to screen thousands of compounds to restore motricity.


By using this innovative model, Professor Drapeau’s team will try to develop new ALS therapeutics approaches, a disease for which no effective treatment is available.
