Scientists Dig Up All the Facts on Spruce DNA

May is a special time of year in Québec, as the province celebrates Tree and Forest Month. As a fitting tribute, John Mackay and Jean Bousquet, two Québec-based scientists from Laval University, have made a major breakthrough in the rapidly evolving field of forestry research. Working in partnership with Canadian and Scandinavian researchers, they have completed a large-scale international study on the DNA of coniferous trees. The team has, in fact, sequenced the full genome of the white spruce and Norwegian spruce. These findings are expected to yield significant benefits for the environment and the forest industry’s competitiveness.
