Discovering DNA - Scientific Workshops

Génome Québec is proud to team up with Let's talk science to offer, for free, DNA and biotechnology workshops to students and teachers all across Québec.

As part of Let's talk Science Outreach, science teachers can welcome trained university students volunteers in their class, who will deliver a hands-on workshop for the students.

  • DNA Kit - Whodunnit?
    • Description : A criminal investigation situation during which students will be initiated to DNA manipulation laboratory techniques.
    • Covered topics:
      • DNA (structure, fingerprint, replication)
      • Biotechnology
      • Scientific investigation
      • Gene typing
    • Activities : 
      • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
      • Gel Electrophoresis
    • Grade Level : Secondary 3 to 5
    • Duration : 70-90 minutes

 

  • DNA 101 Workshop
    • Description : Initiation to basic DNA concepts
    • Covered topics :
      • DNA and its structure
      • Cell
      • Molecule
    • Activities : 
      • Extract banana DNA
      • Make a candy DNA molecule
    • Grade Level : Secondary 1 and 2
    • Duration: 60 minutes

 

Note : Volunteers can adapt these activities to your needs and resources, and even create a made-to-measure activity!
