The Zone Agtech and Génome Québec announce a partnership to accelerate the development of Québec genomic solutions for the agri-food sector.


Very well positioned internationally, Québec combines key expertise in artificial intelligence (thanks to its recognized international pole), in genomics (notably thanks to the Centre d’expertise et de services Génome Québec), and in agtech (thanks to its innovation zone, the Zone Agtech, which brings together more than 250 member companies and partners). With these three areas of expertise now combined, Québec has everything it needs to propel the development of world-class genomic solutions for the agri-food sector and, at the same time, to consolidate Québec's position on the international stage.



Genomics makes it possible to study a plant's DNA to develop more productive varieties adapted to Québec's growing conditions," says Stéphanie Lord-Fontaine, Vice-President, Scientific Affairs at Génome Québec. It therefore provides crucial information to agricultural stakeholders who wish to reduce their consumption of inputs (water and pesticides, in particular) and losses associated with diseases.

The Zone Agtech and Génome Québec have already collaborated on a joint project developed and carried out by Ayos Technologies, a Québec company that has designed a molecular tool to precisely identify the different variants of Phytophthora rot present in the field, making the selection of soybean varieties resistant to the disease a simple decision. The pathogen causes yield losses of up to $1,500 per hectare for producers in the province.

We realized right away that we were complementary," adds Stéphanie Lord-Fontaine. While Génome Québec supported the company by offering advice and financing for its technological development, the Zone Agtech collaborated with the Ayos team to support them in understanding its ecosystem and its pre-commercialization phase. The synergy of our teams allows us to offer a 360° support to companies that focus on the development of genomic tools for agriculture.
