ALPHAgenomics: integrating genomics and phenomics for the swine industry

Principal Investigator: Claude Robert
Theme : Agriculture and Bioproducts
Competition : Genome Canada competition - Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP)
Status : In progress
Start : Oct. 1, 2021
End: Sept. 30, 2024
Budget : $2,000,000.00

The Canadian pork meat industry is largely integrated from animal feed production up to meat product exports. This offers the capacity to collect valuable information across the entire chain of production.  OLYMEL and AlphaGene have been able to compete in the market through rigorous management of nucleus herds and adoption of cutting-edge innovations, including genomic evaluation as part of their breeding decisions.

The project will develop an ‘omics based bioinformatics web environment which will enable AlphaGene to meet their needs for genomic analyses and implement a multidisciplinary approach to data collection providing novel angles for data-based decisions in OLYMEL’s routine operations. The implementation of these genomics tools will allow OLYMEL to maintain their competitiveness and continue to sell to markets demanding premium quality internationally.
