This partnership with AAFC was launched following the results of the Genome Canada LSARP 2018 Competition: Genomics Solutions for Agriculture, Agri-food, Fisheries and Aquaculture. Only the projects that were selected by Genome Canada but unable to be funded due to lack of funds were able to participate in this competition. In the same vein as the LSARP 2018 competition, AAFC aimed to encourage its scientists to foster collaboration with their academic and industry colleagues. Génome Québec saw it as a great opportunity to help establish new partnerships and allow Quebec researchers to be competitive at national level. In addition, these innovative partnerships allow Quebec to increase the economic development of this strategic sector.
Finally, by partnering with AAFC, Génome Québec promotes the entry of federal money into the province and diversifies its collaborations with other sources of funding.

Genomics Integration Program: In order to increase the value of genomic discoveries, Génome Québec is offering grants ranging between $50,000 and $200,000 to fund collaborations between academic researchers and partners capable of implementing/commercializing the results of their research. The funds are to be used to establish a proof of concept required to obtain subsequent funding. Projects must be related to Human Health and include at least one aspect derived from “omic” technologies (genomic, epigenomic, metabolomic, metagenomic, nutrigenomic, pharmacogenomic, proteomic, transcriptomic, etc.), for example: biomarker or target validation, pre-clinical studies for rare disease treatments, therapy response prediction tools, etc.

Génome Québec is pleased to announce a new competition for large scale applied research projects from Genome Canada, in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada. This initiative aims to support and enhance research projects using genomics approaches to address challenges and opportunities related to the Canada’s natural resources and environmental sectors, including interaction between these topics.
The total funding envelope for this competition is $25 million from Genome Canada and approximately $1.5 million from Natural Resources Canada. The contribution of GC for each approved project will range from $1 million to $3 million. A minimum of 50% of the remaining project funding will have to be provided by other sources of funding and equivalent to the funding provided by Genome Canada.

On June 15, 2018, Genome Canada, in partnership with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, launched a new funding competition seeking proposals for large-scale research projects that will propose genomic solutions in agriculture, agri-food, fisheries and aquaculture.
In keeping with Genome Canada's mandate to invest in large-scale projects, project budgets can range from $2 to $8 million and can be up to four years in duration. Genome Canada will fund a maximum of $4 million per project. The rest of a project’s funding will have to come from other sources. The total funding envelope for this competition is $30 million from Genome Canada and $16 million from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
In order to better prepare the projects for this competition, Génome Québec will offer support throughout the process to all applicants, including on the strategic and administrative orientation of an application. Génome Québec will organize "friendly" peer reviews of pre-applications prior to submission to Genome Canada. All applicants will receive feedback on their applications in order to render them more competitive.

On May 29th, 2014, Genome Canada has launched a new competition to support the establishment of a network called Genomics Innovation Network (GIN) with the goal to facilitate an environment that allows innovation centres across Canada to collaborate and harness their collective power for the advancement of genomics research in Canada. Individual innovation centres that are successful in receiving Core Operating Support funds through this competition will become founding members (Nodes) of the GIN.
The mission of the GIN will be to create a mechanism for the Nodes across Canada to work together collaboratively, which will also aid in providing the highest quality genomic technologies and advice to the research community. Each Node will provide researchers access to high throughput genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing, RNA expression, protein identification and quantitation, and metabolomics, as well as new method and protocol development, data analysis and bioinformatics. Each Node will also assist researchers in the development of research proposals by providing advice on appropriate technologies, study design, data analysis and bioinformatics that improve the quality of the research.

The objective of the Application of Genomic Tools to the Detection and Surveillance of Listeria monocytogenes Request for Applications (RFA) is to support research that will demonstrate how genomics-based research/technologies can contribute to a more evidence-based approach to detection and surveillance of Listeria.
The current RFA is being run under the auspices of Genome Canada'a Emerging Issues Program that supports projects that are reactive and responsive to emerging issues of high importance, both nationally and internationally. An emerging issue has been defined as an unanticipated issue, which has newly arisen or suddenly increased in importance, and requires urgent/immediate attention and timely resolution (e.g. SARS, C. difficile).
It is expected that one consortium will be funded to carry out this research. It is anticipated that the consortium will consist of teams of scientists from academia paired with scientists from the CFIA and possibly other Government departments and agencies working in partnership with the Genome Canada-funded Science and Technology Innovation Centres (STICs) or other Canadian sequencing centres.

1. Large scale Applied projets (LAPs): 3 years large-scale multidisciplinary teams tackling complex problems with direct applicability to genomics. 2. Small scale Innovative projects (SIPs): 2 years small-scale, innovative and transformative projects with a maximum from Genome Canada of $250,000 with no co-funding required.

Through this partnership Genome Canada will implement an important element of its Strategic Plan (2012-2017) and CIHR will launch its Personalized Medicine Signature Initiative. This strategic partnership will build on the complementary mandates of Genome Canada and CIHR and provide an opportunity to maximize the effectiveness of the research communities, infrastructure and resources supported by both organizations.
In the context of this competition Personalized Health can be seen as a more evidence based approach to decision making both with regards to health maintenance and disease interventions. There is a spectrum of activities that span what is referred to as the molecular medicine continuum from health maintenance and disease prevention, through early detection, to treatment of disease and disease prognosis (see Fig. 1). This approach relies upon an increasing knowledge of the underlying risk factors, causes, and mechanisms of disease pathogenesis as well as an understanding of the influence of environment, behaviour and lifestyle on the onset and outcomes of the disease state.

Entrepreneurship Education in Genomics (EEG) Program

Launched on February 1, 2011 the EEG pilot program aims to provide Canadian genomics researchers with assistance to facilitate the conversion of their discoveries into commercial successes. If the selected projects deliver the expected benefits, they will form the basis of an ongoing national program.
The competition associated with the EEG program called on experts in scientific and technological commercialization to recommend innovative approaches that could help Genome Canada-funded researchers enhance their entrepreneurial skills.
Proposals had to be submitted by a Canadian business school, preferably in partnership with one or more organizations or businesses working in a relevant area.
Genome Canada received nine projects, two of which came from Québec. On July 11, 2011, the winners were contacted with the results. One Québec project was selected.

In May 2010, Genome Canada launched the 2010 Large-Scale Applied Research Project Competition, for large-scale research projects focused on the application of genomics research such that there would be a high potential for benefits for Canada (with an emphasis on economic benefits) to be realized or initiated before the end of the project. The competition included funding for projects targeting the areas of forestry and the environment, designated the Targeted Competition, as well as funding for projects targeting Genome Canada's other strategic sectors (agriculture, fisheries and human health), designated the Multi-Sector Competition.

The following three areas were targeted: Feedstock Optimization, Microorganisms for Sustainable Processing Technologies, and Value Added-Bioproducts.Crops Theme
Employing genomic and proteomic approaches, the research proposed was required to foster an improved understanding of systems that govern plant growth, development and performance. Funded projects cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the genetic and physiological factors that contribute to the underlying biological processes of Canadian crops. The following three areas were targeted: Basic Plant Genomics, Application of Plant Genomics, and Agriculture and Food Production Sustainability.

International Consortium Initiative (ICI)

In order to be eligible for an ICI, the following criteria must be met:
- The project must have clear international visibility.
- The project must be led by a Canadian researcher whose major research activities will be in Canada.
- The proposed project must involve an international consortium usually with some form of governance in which the funders will have a proportionate seat on the Board, based on the level of their financial commitment.
- The project should be for a minimum of $50M over three years with other partners committing at least 75% of total costs.
The scale, scope and complexity of ICIs require significant input from Genome Canada, working with the scientists and other key stakeholders, in both the development of the proposal and the on-going governance and oversight.
Projects meeting the above criteria will be accepted at any time and reviewed on a "one off" basis through a joint peer review process developed by the funding partners.
The final decision regarding commitment of Genome Canada funds will be made by the Board of Directors of Genome Canada.
Funding
Funding for ICI proposals can occur in two stages, namely:
-
Support for an initial International Workshop to develop the full proposal (to a maximum of $50,000), and
-
Funding of the full ICI, where the total funding is a minimum of $50M over three years, with Genome Canada contributing a maximum of 25% of total eligible costs.
At this time Genome Canada does not have funds to support additional ICI proposals. Funds are available, however, for a limited number of workshops. The future ability of Genome Canada to fund ICIs is predicated on the raising of additional funds for genomics and proteomics research. As such, applicants are working "in good faith" in anticipation that Genome Canada will be successful in securing new funding.
Application Process
Applicants who are interested in submitting applications for ICI funding must contact Genome Canada and one of the six Genome Centres to initiate the application process. Genome Canada and the Genome Centre(s), involved with a particular ICI will actively communicate with the applicants concerning the application and will keep each other informed with respect to the progress of the application.
Letter of Intent (LOI)
Following the initial contact and expression of interest the applicant(s) must submit a Letter of Intent to Genome Canada. Genome Canada’s Science and Industry Advisory Committee (SIAC) will assist in the review of the LOIs, providing advice to Genome Canada staff on the:
- strategic importance of the proposed area(s) of research,
- potential for impact in Canada,
- potential for sustained leadership, by Canadian scientists in the field, and
- inclusion of experts and other groups working in the area of proposed research.
Those applications that demonstrate the potential to pursue the development of a full ICI proposal will be offered administrative support and funding (to a maximum of $50,000) to hold an international workshop. The goal of the workshop is to bring together international and Canadian stakeholders (researchers and funders) to:
- validate and confirm the potential and capacity for a Canadian-led ICI,
- identify additional participants and funders, and
- initiate the development of a proposal.
Submission of a Full Proposal
Genome Canada staff will work closely with the applicants, and the Genome Centre(s), as they develop their ICI proposals providing advice on programmatic issues, governance and funding. Genome Canada and Genome Centre staff will simultaneously engage in discussions with other potential funders and assist in determining appropriate governance structures, funding models, and in some cases, collaborate with funders in developing a joint peer review process.
The general review criteria for ICI projects are consistent with those established for other Genome Canada competitions. If appropriate, a joint peer-review process with potential funding partners will be undertaken, with the peer review recommendations submitted to each funding agency for consideration. In some cases each participating agency may undertake an independent review and decision regarding its financial commitment to the particular ICI.
